Earthkit 1.0 supports next-generation weather and climate workflows

Earthkit 1.0

 

ECMWF has released earthkit 1.0, a major milestone in its open-source Python software ecosystem for working with weather and climate data.

Earthkit provides a flexible set of tools for accessing, processing, analysing and visualising meteorological and climate data. Rather than being a single package, it is an ecosystem of interoperable Python packages that can be used individually or combined to build complete scientific workflows.

The 1.0 release marks an important step for users as earthkit’s core interfaces are now stable, providing a reliable foundation for research and operational applications and giving users greater confidence that workflows will remain compatible through future 1.x releases.

The release supports ECMWF’s wider software strategy to make scientific software more reusable, scalable, interoperable and open. Earthkit combines established open-source Python libraries with components developed and proven in ECMWF’s operational environment.

Earthkit is already used in several ECMWF systems, including much of the data processing behind the ecCharts web service and parts of the Anemoi machine learning framework.

Over time, earthkit is intended to replace two of ECMWF’s long-standing software packages, Metview and Magics. Development will continue with Member States and external partners, with documentation and migration support helping existing users transition to the new ecosystem.
