Following activities that took place in Bonn, Germany (7–11 April 2025) and Bologna, Italy (15–19 September 2025), the final instalment of our 50th anniversary programme will take place in Reading, UK, from 1 to 3 December.
This concluding series of events will highlight advances in machine learning (ML) and highlight collaborative initiatives with the national meteorological services of our Member States.
Events in Reading
The programme in Reading will bring together staff from ECMWF and representatives from Member States for the Member State ML pilot project meeting on Monday and Tuesday.
On Wednesday 3 December, 11:00 to 17:00 GMT, a showcase will highlight advances across Europe in the use of ML for weather forecasting, which will be available to follow online. Several national meteorological services from our Member States will present their activities, including how ML is being used in parallel with physics-based models and the improvements this is enabling.
You can watch the livestream on our website.

- Machine learning for numerical weather prediction (PDF, 2.82 MB)
They accompany the four papers published earlier in the year:
- The critical role of high-performance computing in medium-range weather forecasting: half a century of technology innovation (PDF, 5.26 MB)
- Fifty years of Earth system modelling at ECMWF (PDF, 1.8 MB)
- Fifty years of data assimilation at ECMWF (PDF, 1.8 MB)
- Ten years of Copernicus at ECMWF (PDF, 2.2 MB)
The six publications have been collated in a book marking 50 years of ECMWF.
