Passive satellite sounding data in the spotlight
From 26 March to 1 April, ECMWF staff co-organised and attended the 19th International TOVS Study Conference (ITSC) on Jeju Island, South Korea. The conference is held every 18 to 24 months and this year was hosted in impressive fashion by the Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA).

MACC data help forecast meningitis outbreaks
A study, which started as one of the MACC service chain development examples, has now led to a well-received publication on meningitis.

Workshop on Scalability
The challenges of highly parallel computing in areas such as observational data processing, data assimilation, the formulation of the model dynamical core and model output management have led to the development of a Scalability Programme at ECMWF. The project will coordinate resources defining the future forecasting system across all scales. This will be in preparation for future high-performance computing architectures aiming at accurate, efficient and scalable algorithms and code structures.

IPCC report confirm human costs of climate change
Yokohama, 31 March 2014 – The IPCC’s Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, a comprehensive assessment report by leading scientists launched here today, offers policymakers and the general public a wealth of information about how climate change will affect the lives of current and future generations – and what governments can do to adapt and reduce vulnerabilities.

Global Partnership for enhanced resilience to flood risk
Under the lead of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and the Dartmouth Flood Observatory (University of Colorado), the Global Flood Partnership was launched earlier this month at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in Reading, UK. It is a unique international forum aimed at developing a global flood observation and modelling infrastructure for managing and forecasting flood risk at a global scale.

ECMWF Newsletter
The ECMWF Newsletter is published quarterly and contains articles about new developments and systems at ECMWF.
The winter 2013/14 edition of the ECMWF Newsletter has been published. The main articles deal with ten years of ENVISAT data at ECMWF, skill of ECMWF's monthly forecasts, representation of stable boundary layers, seasonal forecasts of crop irrigation needs, and 3D visualization of ensemble forecasts.

TIGGE-LAM improves regional ensemble forecasts
The World Weather Research Programme has launched a new tool to improve regional ensemble forecasts of high-impact weather and so strengthen early warning and disaster prevention.
A single web portal hosted by the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) called TIGGE-LAM is now available. It currently groups five European ensemble systems in a standard data format, and five more will be added in the near future.
