ECMWF has received a prestigious European Public Sector Award (EPSA).
The accolade, which saw ECMWF given third place, was awarded for ECMWF's entry: ‘Copernicus Data Stores (CDS & ADS): Modernising Europe's Open Climate and Atmosphere Data Platforms’, one of three winning projects in the category ‘Investing in Infrastructure, Mobility and Energy’.
EPSAs are a Europe-wide award scheme run by the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA) for public sector entities at all levels of government. They have been organised every two years since 2019.
The EPSA 2025–26 Award recognised ECMWF’s work on the Atmosphere Data Store (ADS) and the Climate Data Store (CDS).
The ADS provides a one-stop shop to explore the wealth of information provided by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) about the Earth’s atmospheric composition. The Climate Data Store (CDS) provides this one-stop shop for information on the Earth’s past, present and future climate generated by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).
Data from both services support policymakers, business and citizens to make informed choices on mitigation and adaptation practices for key human and societal activities.
Receiving the award at the EPSA 2025–26 Award Ceremony at EIPA’s headquarters in Maastricht in the Netherlands were ECMWF Director of CAMS Laurence Rouil and ECMWF Director of C3S, Carlo Buontempo.
CAMS and C3S are operated by ECMWF on behalf of the European Commission; two of six Copernicus services from the Commission’s flagship Earth observation programme.
C3S Director Carlo Buontempo said: “Building climate resilience and setting environment policy depends on access to robust and trustworthy data. The data stores of Copernicus at ECMWF, first and foremost a public infrastructure, are designed to make this environmental data not only freely available, but usable in both policy and decision-making. We are delighted, therefore, that those efforts have been recognised by EPSA."
