ECMWF’s year of activities for its 50th anniversary will continue from 15 to 19 September with a series of workshops and meetings to be held in Bologna, Italy.
The events in Bologna, where our high-performance computing facility is situated, come after a series of events at our duty station in Bonn, Germany, in April. They will be followed by concluding events at our headquarters in Reading, UK, in December.
Two papers, on high-performance computing/infrastructure and meeting users’ demands, will also be published in September. Up-to-date information on the anniversary schedule is provided on our website.
Five events
Bologna will host:
- the 21st ECMWF workshop on high-performance computing (HPC) in meteorology
- the 3rd ECMWF Destination Earth Annual Meeting
- the traditional forecast user forum, Using ECMWF’s Forecasts (UEF2025)
- and the European Weather Cloud (EWC) User Workshop 2025.

The 21st edition of the biennial ECMWF workshop on high-performance computing in meteorology will take place from 15 to 19 September. This year’s theme is Exploring the Past, Present and Future of HPC in Meteorology. Amidst the evolution of exascale computing, data-driven modelling and sustainability challenges, the event will reflect on the past, assess current developments, and explore future directions.

The 3rd edition of ECMWF’s Destination Earth Annual Meeting will take place on 16 and 17 September. The event will bring together ECMWF contractors working on the DestinE initiative to share ideas and future plans, and to network with one another. This event is by invitation only. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend the opening session that marks the week of anniversary events in Bologna.

Using ECMWF’s Forecasts (UEF2025) will be held from 15 to 18 September. It is a forum for our forecast users to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss the use and performance of our forecasts and related products. Participants can give feedback on our forecast performance and available products and services, stay informed about our updates and plans, and connect with us and fellow users.

The European Weather Cloud (EWC) User Workshop 2025 will take place on 18 September. This event, co-organised by ECMWF and EUMETSAT, will explore the latest developments, share experiences, and shape the future of the EWC. It is open to participants from ECMWF and EUMETSAT Member and Co-operating States, regardless of whether you are an active EWC user or just getting started.
