HPC Workshop 2014

Monday 27 October 2014 saw the start of the 16th Workshop on High Performance Computing in Meteorology.  This workshop, which ECMWF organises every other year, aims to provide a forum where meteorological scientists, computer scientists and vendors of supercomputers can report on their experience and achievements in the field of high performance computing during the last two years. Over the next five days, experts from around the world will also have opportunities to share views and exchange best practice.

  • Meteorological scientists will present their achievements in the development of parallel computing techniques and algorithms, as well as exchange ideas on the use of supercomputers in future research.
  • Computer scientists will give updates on their efforts in providing tools which will help users to exploit the power of supercomputers in the field of meteorology.
  • Vendors of supercomputers will have the opportunity to talk to managers and end users of meteorological computer centres about their current and future products.

As well as considering plans for the future and requirements for computing power, this year’s specific focus will be on the issues surrounding the scalability of Numerical Weather Prediction codes and the steps that will be required to enable us to use future large-scale heterogeneous computer systems.
