Summary:

Dr. Vasileios Baousis is a Senior Analyst at the European Center of Medium Weather Forecast and he has a background in both weather forecasting and computing. He completed a BSc at the Hellenic Air Force Academy before becoming an operational weather forecaster at the Hellenic National Meteorological Service. He was awarded two Master of Sciences in communication systems and data networks in Greece and the UK, followed by a PhD in ‘Mobile and distributed computing’ at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens(NKUA). Vasileios in the last few years, he has been leading the design, development and evolution of the European Weather Cloud infrastructure at ECMWF. His involvement has ranged from the hardware specification, deployment and configuration to deploying the cloud infrastructure, storage and orchestration. Currently, Vasileios is a Primary Investigator (PI) and Technical Manager in a number of European Commission (EC) funded projects: PI and Technical  Manager eo4eu project, PI in Leadership for Climate resilient buildings (CLIMRES project), DEPLOY AI, Buildspace and Mediwin projects. 

Vasileios chairs sessions and serves regularly in Scientific and Program committees of international conferences like, European Geoscience Union General Assemply (EGU), Living Planet Symposium, BIDS, EUMETSAT Conferences, AI-driven Data Engineering and Reusability for Earth and Space Sciences (DARES 2025) and serves as a regular reviewer to International Scientific Journals ( a selection of journals Journal of Systems and Software, Elsevier, Journal of Intelligent Systems, IEEE, Journal Of Autonomous Agents and Multiagent systems, Springer and a various IEEE conferences. Vasileios is also participating in EC funded project evaluation process.

Career background:

Vasileios was born in Athens, Greece. He started his career in the Hellenic Air Force Academy (HAFA)-·BSc, Hellenic Air Force Academy. After his graduation he worked as a trainee pilot and then after graduating from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS)/First Class Forecaster he worked as an operational meteorologist in various airbases in Greece. He completed a MSc, "Networking and Telecommunications Engineering” National and Kapodistrian University of Athens/Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications,, Greece and he became also a  staff member of the Communication Networks Laboratory (CNL) and Pervasive Computing Research Group/University of Athens, a MSC  "'Mobile and Satellite Communications", University of Surrey/ Dept. of Electronics and Physical Sciences, UK (2003) and finally awarded a  PhD degree in Distributed and mobile computing from  the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens/Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications, Greece. Since 2010 is a staff member of the ECMWF/Computing Department.
