Summary:

Dr. Claudio Pisa is a Cloud Computing Analyst in the Computing Department at ECMWF. His work focuses on cloud computing, distributed systems, virtualisation infrastructures and open-source technologies supporting data-intensive scientific workloads. He has a background in computer networks, cloud and edge computing, software-defined networking, computer security and open science. 

At ECMWF, Claudio contributes to cloud-based infrastructure and services for Earth observation and weather and climate related applications, through EU-funded projects such as EO4EU, BUILDSPACE, CLIMRES and Deploy AI. His work emphasises scalable, interoperable and automated computing environments based on cloud automation and orchestration technologies.

Career background:

Claudio joined ECMWF in 2023 as a Cloud Computing Analyst in the Computing Department. Before joining ECMWF, Claudio worked at GARR, the Italian National Research and Education Network, in the Distributed Computing and Storage department, where he was involved in the design, development and management of virtualisation infrastructures and cloud services, as well as activities related to the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). He has been an active participant in the GÉANT community, supporting cloud computing infrastructure harmonisation. 

Previously, Claudio worked in research and development across academic and industrial environments (University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Maynooth University, CNIT, Unidata), contributing to projects in computer networks, cloud and edge computing, software-defined networking, IoT and computer security. He has lectured in university courses, with a focus on programming and networking. He has also been active in the Free/Libre and Open Source Software community and in community networking initiatives. 

Claudio holds a master degree in Computer Science Engineering from Roma Tre University and a PhD in Telecommunications and Microelectronics from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
