Christine Kitchen

Deputy Director of Computing
Computing

Summary:

Christine joined the Centre in January 2022 as Deputy Director of the Computing Department to provide technical guidance and support strategic developments - ensuring our activities align with the Centre's organisational goals by evolving and collating technical requirements, and fostering cross-team collaborations over the sections. Guiding and reviewing priorities for efficient operations helps ensure the Computing Department delivers reliable, innovative and effective services for ECMWF and its programmes.

Christine is one of the Machine Learning Coordinators for the Centre together with Matthew Chantry and Victoria Bennett as well as a member of the Externally Funded Project (EFP) review team.

Christine is based in ECMWF's Reading (UK) office.

Professional interests:
  • High-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure — especially commissioning and operating large supercomputers
  • Research computing services for scientific research
  • Community engagement / user-driven service design
  • Strategic planning and integration of compute services (e.g. system integration, operational readiness)
Career background:

Prior to joining ECMWF, Christine's career involved establishing and operating research computing services across academia and industry.  Originally starting as researcher in the pharmaceutical sector using HPC systems to support research into candidate drug design, her role evolved from end-user to operating and managing the services, before joining a Research Council laboratory responsible for running and benchmarking HPC technologies and providing advice to UK Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).  From these experiences and insight, Christine's career progressed to establish a new research computing centre at Cardiff University,  which subsequently provided the foundations for a successful business case to build and operate a national supercomputing facility (including the associated datacentre infrastructure), uniting a consortium of Welsh HEIs to deliver a pan-country service to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) using a public sector broadband network. Christine's career started as an end-user of services, and has covered roles from HPC system administration, service desks, designing and operating datacentres, to managerial responsibilities including establishing teams and developing processes -  providing exposure to the wide variety of activities associated with designing and delivering effective and efficient services.

Education:

Christine has a BSc (Single Honors) and PhD in Chemistry awarded in 1996 and 2000 respectively.
