ECMWF presents the AI Weather Quest, an innovative global competition aimed at advancing sub-seasonal weather forecasting through the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

This initiative invites participants from around the world to produce and submit sub-seasonal weather forecasts – covering the critical weeks between medium-range and seasonal predictions – using AI/ML models.

Sub-seasonal forecasting refers to predicting weather conditions for periods ranging from two weeks to two months ahead.

Traditional numerical weather prediction models often face challenges in this timeframe due to the complex interplay of atmospheric and environmental factors. The AI Weather Quest seeks to overcome these challenges by leveraging AI/ML techniques to enhance forecast accuracy and reliability.

Competition structure

The AI Weather Quest is structured in two phases:

  • Initial training phase (March – August 2025): Participants will have the opportunity to develop and refine their AI/ML models.
  • Competition phase (August 2025 – September 2026): Teams will submit weekly, real-time sub-seasonal forecasts across four 13-week periods.

Why participate?

Engaging in the AI Weather Quest offers several benefits:

  • Enhance your expertise in AI/ML by tackling real-world forecasting challenges.
  • Contribute to the evolution of weather forecasting methodologies, with the potential for your models to be integrated into operational systems.
  • Connect with ECMWF and a global community of experts at the forefront of AI and meteorology.
  • Showcase your innovative contributions on an international platform dedicated to advancing weather forecasting.

Inclusivity and participation

The competition is open to a diverse array of participants, including participants from international corporations, forecasting institutions, AI/ML experts, meteorologists, researchers, and students from various fields. The competition welcomes both individual participants and teams of up to 10 members.

No prior experience in weather forecasting is required; a strong interest in applying AI/ML to complex scientific challenges is essential.

ECMWF's commitment

As a leading institution in numerical weather prediction, ECMWF is dedicated to exploring how AI/ML techniques can complement traditional forecasting methods.

By organising the AI Weather Quest, ECMWF aims to identify innovative solutions and integrate them into operational forecasting, addressing the growing demands of industries and communities worldwide.
