Abstract This report describes a method developed for detecting and removing artificial breaks in radiosonde time series. These breaks affect the applicability of radiosonde time series for climate change detection. They also affect the quality of reanalyses assimilating these data, particularly in the pre-satellite era. While radiosondes measure temperature, humidity and wind, the analysis here is restricted to temperature time series.
