ECMWF | Reading |7-8 March 2016
Workshop description
ECMWF organised a two day workshop in Reading on 7 and 8 March 2016, aimed at the organisations already running MARS servers, being in the process of deploying MARS servers or considering deploying MARS in the near future. The workshop provided comprehensive presentation of recent changes to MARS to help the participants establish migration plans to the latest MARS version.
Background
The MARS software is used by several Member and Co-operating States and a few external sites. Some sites have recently installed MARS and others run it as their operational archive system. Over the years, the MARS software has been developed to deliver improved performance and additional functionality that may not have been installed at all the external sites. One major evolution, for example, has been the development of a distributed version of MARS and the integration of cmake to build the MARS suite.
Workshop outline
Discussions covered the following topics:
- New functionality in MARS
- Compilation/deployment of recent releases using cmake
- Distributed MARS over a cluster of hosts
- Archiving GRIB edition 2 in MARS
Experience of other sites using MARS was shared, for example:
- Site configuration
- Current usage
- Type of data archived
- Local modifications
- Expectations and future collaborations
