Nils Peter Wedi

I joined the Research Department of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) in 1995.

I am currently working as a Principal Scientist in the Numerical Aspects Section. My main interests are the numerical simulation of atmospheric processes with a view to improve the weather forecast and the timely delivery of severe weather warnings world-wide. I take a particular interest in improving the realism as well as the fidelity of the simulations and therefore work on the algorithms and equations used in numerical weather prediction (NWP). I also use virtual or actual laboratory studies of wave-driven phenomena with the aim to contribute to the understanding of climate and weather. Recent work involved the development and testing of the non-hydrostatic variant of ECMWF's Integrated Forecasting System (IFS), and the development and testing of fast Legendre transforms that enable us to perform spectral transforms at horizontal resolutions in the order of a few kilometers at an acceptable computational cost, thus pushing the limits of global NWP.

In my spare time I fly gliders and small aircraft, which is why I have a keen interest in weather and boundary layer meteorology in particular.
