TESSEL: Tiled ECMWF Scheme for Surface Exchanges over Land

A substantial number of changes to the analysis and model of the land surface and sea ice has been planned and prepared for ERA40. It went operationally as part of CY22R3 on 27 June 2000.

The changes have been planned largely as a result of the ECMWF/GEWEX Workshop on Modelling and data assimilation of the land surface, held at ECMWF 29 June-2 July 1998, and the Workshop on ERA40 boundary conditions, held at ECMWF, 3 July 1998. The work involved Anton, Bart, Jean-François, João, Pedro, and Ulrich.

The revised scheme will incorporate changes to the following elements:

Technical changes needed include:

The changes are detailed in a comprehensive list of things to do. For more details on parameter settings and validation, including the data sets to be used, see also Bart's home page.

The soil and surface model changes will be tested in 0-d mode on the following data sets. Please note that the list does not include the snow and sea ice data sets. See also Bart's home page.
