    Description

This software is being developed as part of the Meteo activity of SIMDAT (an IST Framework Programme 6 European funded project).

The software integrates a stack of self-contained components that can be used to build a distributed network of publishing centres interested in serving data to a wider community. The framework provides an implementation of some of the forthcoming WMO Information System (WIS) elements integrated by the Meteo partners together with their legacy data systems to build the VGISC prototype. Components are based on standard technologies, protocols and formats such as web services, REST, ISO 19115 and OAI amongst others. See further description.

The software will be named differently once the SIMDAT project is completed.

SIMDAT is a registered trademark of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur
    Förderung der angewandten Forschung e.V.

    Roadmap

During the lifetime of the SIMDAT project (which will be completed in September 2008), the software will include two major releases:

    • Q1 2008: Implementation of the subscription service.
    • Q2 2008: Data Replication service.

    Changes

SIMDAT developments have come out under four major releases:

    September 2005

    • The first release of the software included a data repository and catalogue node with a first version of the synchronisation engine.

    July 2006

    • Major enhancements of the node providing a stable synchronisation engine based on a journalised system and with support for a mesh network allowing communication between nodes on a Peer to Peer basis.
    • A zero development data repository where integration of existing data access is reduced to the minimum development for quick deployment and set-up.
    • An internet portal offering a discovery and data access service.
    • Support for the ingestion of several metadata formats (THREDDS, Dublin Core, WMO Core Profile version 0.2 and 0.3 and E2EDM ) through configuration files that extract discoverable information through xpath expressions.

    February 2007

    • Support for filtering functions in the synchronisation engine (e.g. filter metadata by owner)
    • Support for dynamic path discovery on the mesh network via integration of the AODV.
    • Improved xml parsing technique.

    October 2007

    • Release of the infrastructure supporting security services. (User registration, single sign-on, trust services)
