Seminar on Recent developments in the use of satellite observations in Numerical Weather Prediction , 3 - 7 September 2007
ContentsOver the past 10 years, satellite observations have become the predominant source of information assimilated in NWP due mainly to improvements in remote sensing instruments, numerical model accuracy and realism, and data assimilation techniques. This seminar will provide a pedagogical review of the recent advances and future challenges in the use of satellite data in NWP. Topics to be covered will include the exploitation of hyperspectral infrared sounders, the assimilation of cloud and rain-affected radiances and the opportunities offered by future satellite instruments for environment monitoring. Although focussed on the atmosphere, this seminar will also provide a state-of-the-art review of satellite data assimilation for ocean and land applications. Some attention will be given to future R&D and operational satellite programmes. In co-sponsorship with the EUMETSAT NWP SAF, a special session will be dedicated to the recently launched EUMETSAT polar satellite METOP and its impact on NWP. ProgrammeParticipants are requested to arrive at ECMWF between 09:30 and 10:00 on Monday 3 September for registration. The seminar will close at 13:00 on Friday 7 September. AttendanceThe seminar is open to the ECMWF Member States and Co-operating States. There is no registration fee and no financial support is available for participants. Applications from non-Member States can be accepted if places are available following the deadline for Member State applications. For non-Member States a registration fee is charged.
